Trauma-Informed School District Approach Moves Forward
At the October 19, 2017 Board of Education meeting Board Member Rachele Espiritu introduced a Trauma-Informed School District resolution, affirming the district’s intent to “work in a strategic, culturally-responsive, strength-based, preventative way to best meet the needs of our diverse students, families and educators that mitigates the impact of trauma on the social emotional and academic growth of our students.”
“We know that trauma has no boundaries … traumatic events can happen to anyone. For that reason, I wanted to be sure that we as a school district are prepared to address the traumatic events that our students and adults are facing in their schools and communities,” said Espiritu. “Tonight, I’m introducing a resolution to help us do that because I know Denver can be a leader in this area in the nation.”
The resolution roots this work in the Whole Child, and reaffirms the board’s support for ensuring all our students and educators feel supported, engaged, safe, healthy, challenged, and socially and emotionally intelligent.

Bond and Mill Oversight Committees Report Out
The 2016 bond and mill oversight committees reported out on how those funds have been spent to date. Committee members have participated in monthly meetings since March. A recent bus tour of completed projects was a highlight for committee members, who said the experience provided a better understanding of the projects. The bond committee is increasing meeting length to ensure more time to cover communications, maintenance and financial transparency. The mill update focused on whole child and early literacy supports, college and career readiness, and the district’s Great Teaching and Leading strategies.

Business Diversity and Outreach Update
The DPS Office of of Business Diversity provided an update on the Minority and Women’s Business Enterprise (MWBE) business diversity and outreach program, including MWBE bond spending, Small Business Enterprise set-aside and the recent Reverse Trade Fair.
