Board Members
Mary Seawell - At-Large - President
Mary Seawell was elected to the board as an at-large representative in November 2009. Before joining the board, Mary worked for Get Smart Schools to create an MBA in School Leadership at the University of Denver. She is a past Executive Director of both the Sturm Family Foundation and Judi’s House, a grief center for children. In 2000 she was contracted by the Ford Foundation to evaluate Uganda’s only legal aid clinic. At the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, she helped coordinate a statewide community planning effort for HIV/AIDS prevention and created a medical monitoring program for communities surrounding the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.
Mary has served on the boards of numerous nonprofits including Bluff Lake Nature Center, the Carolyn W. and Charles T. Beaird Family Foundation, the Lab at Belmar, the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program, and the Chinook Fund. She was a board member for the Odyssey School and a founding board member for the Denver Language School.
She earned her B.A. from American University in Print Journalism with a minor in philosophy. She was a James C. Owen, Jr/Agron Endowed Scholar at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law where she received her Juris Doctorate in 2001. She and her husband are raising their three daughters in Stapleton not far from her childhood home in Park Hill. Mary was raised in both Durham, North Carolina by her mother and step-father and in Denver by her father and step-mother. Mary is a proud DPS parent. Her three daughters are all DPS students.
In addition to her duties on the Board of Education, Mary is a member of the Century Foundation Consortium on Socioeconomic Integration. She is the DPS board representative on the Rocky Mountain School for Expeditionary Learning. She is also the DPS Board Treasurer.
